LOFT ART GALLERY - Amur Yakus, Opening show of Loft Art Gallery in Marrakech
5 Boulevard El Mansour Eddahbi, Gueliz, Marrakech 40000 - Opening from 6:30 pm

The Loft Art Gallery is pleased to invite you to the opening on Thursday 8th February, 2024, of the exhibition Amur Yakus, a grand inaugural exhibition spanning three floors of its new gallery located in the heart of the iconic Guéliz district in Marrakech.

The three-dimensional exhibition brings together artists under the Tamazight title of Amur Yakus, the etymological source of the imperial city, intersecting with paths and cultures. Spread across two floors, the exhibition comprises three elements: the legacy of the postcolonial movement in Morocco (Melehi, Belkahia, M. Agueznay, Hamidi, Ghattas), the emergence of contemporary talents from the continent (J. Choumali, M. Lamrabat, A. Agueznay, O. Bengebara, N. Azarzar, K. Yaro...), and a tribute to the artist Marion Boehm, who drew much inspiration from the multiculturalism that defines our era.

"Art has a significant role to play. It connects people, especially different cultures. It provides hope and beauty at the moments when we need it the most." Yasmine Berrada, co-founder of Loft Art Gallery.

DDAR الدار ميوزك
A refined menu of house music, brought to you by local selectors.

Electronic music first bloomed in Morocco as early as the 60s, as Brian Jones recorded the Pipes of Pan of Jajoukawith musicians in the Rif mountains. The 90s brought further electronisation of the rich moroccan musical heritage, a dynamic brightly displayed in Aflak’s album Marocain Moderne. Since then, the beats never stopped and the eclectic craft handed to younger generations is constantly enriched. We’ll click Play. Come and listen!

Hosted at Malhoun, DDAR  - الدار ميوزك is a community gathering, tunes by local selectors from 7:30 to 11pm.

Seloua Ejjennane presented at Riad Stella Cadente by MCC Gallery
Riad Stella Cadente, Dar El Bacha

Moroccan artist Seloua Ejjennane creates figurines from recycled materials, giving rise to fantastical characters in diverse and whimsical worlds. One of her major exhibitions, known as 'Vice et verre ça,' features figurines with double faces, symbolizing the unity and complexity of human aspects. The artist's creations, including vases, masks, and feathers, stem from her travels in China and Morocco. The names El Haz, El Haza, and El Bergag clearly indicate the Moroccan origins of the artist.

Seloua Ejjennane's sculptures are inspired by her own life and bear witness to her self-discovery and personal experiences. Initially trained in science and later in econometrics, Seloua has become a self-taught and established artist. Her works narrate her life, influenced by her travels and her observation of encountered materials, subject to the accidents and complexities of life.

The title of her sculptural work refers to the existentialist idea that our actions cast a reversed reflection, allowing us to live in perspective.

El Fenn - Alia Ali: حب / LOVE Series, 2021
El Fenn Hotel - Derb Moulay Abdullah Ben Hezzian, 2, Marrakesh 40000

El Fenn is pleased to announce the capsule presentation/installation of photographs by Alia Ali from the حب (hub) // LOVE series, 2021 starting from February 8, 2024, which will launch during the 1-54 Marrakech Art Fair (8th – 11th of February). The photographic series, حب (hub) // LOVE pushes back against the forced reorientation of the native tongue of Alia Ali, Arabic, and sparks a dialogue with one word حب, reclaiming the beauty and nonviolence of her language. By employing photography, textile, and text, this body of work presents various points of entry to complex notions of inclusion, exclusion, erasure, and the politicization of the body and language. Through multiple gradations of color, single images are refracted across five surfaces demonstrating expanded interpretations of love– its expression, reception, and acceptance. The use of textile is significant as it’s sourced from the earth to be woven into something that protects, defines, unifies, and divides us–– it becomes a point of departure from where we all begin, like language, itself. The fluctuation of the word between foreground and background questions the array of relational power within and among micro and macro societal structures. “As a gesture of linguistic reclamation, the photographic series حب (hub) // LOVE presents the Arabic word for love to non-Arabophones to recognize, read, and spread.” Alia Ali.

RAAR - Raid Alena Artist Residency - Riad Alena: Historiographing by Henrique J. Paris curated by curator Clementine Butler-Gallie.
35 Rue Derb Jdid, Marrakech 40000

The installation-exhibition ‘Historiographing’ by Angolan artist-researcher Henrique J. Paris is presented as an outcome of the Riad Alena Artist Residency in Marrakech, during which Paris investigates modes of anti-colonial rupture in past cultural and religious movements — extending from his early concept ‘Home is Where the Body Isn’t’. Initially departing from found internet footage, images and material intentionally shared with the artist; Paris’ research explores African registers that depict scenes of private life, religious conviviality and creative authority. The works within the installation focus on the malleability of spoken language and corpo-literacy; exposing us to figures that highlight rhythmic processes & social mobility in urban landscapes — where traces of colonial empire are dusted with governmental control policies, yet mobile bodies still function to reproduce and testify knowledges: contesting ontological constitutions.

JAAL Riad Resort : Fibi, Lydia et toutes les autres, Margaux Derhy curated by Achraf Remok
Bd Mohamed VI, Marrakech

An installation featuring large-scale embroidered pieces on white linen curtains adorn the main patio of the Riad and evokes the artist grandmother Lydia and some of her great-aunts, Fibi. "We tend to focus on people with extraordinary lives, often forgetting that social movements and revolutionary episodes are also, and above all, the work of anonymous individuals blending into the masses. They don't carry the movement; they are the movement. Every day, initiatives to bring back supposedly forgotten women emerge, while we continue to condemn the truly forgotten to silence. The women to whom we are directly heirs," as feminist author Irene García Galán writes in her work "Hilaria" about her own great-grandmother.” Margaux Derhy
